OUTLOOK PAVILION

Located on a substantial elevated battle-axe site in the inner west of Brisbane, this family home is organized around a central living pavilion that opens to extensive easterly city views.

INTERIOR DESIGN

The architectural language of the home is characterized by a balance of long, dark horizontal floating planes intersecting and overlapping with warm, bold cubist forms. The design emphasizes the “blurring of the lines” between indoors and outdoors, fostering seamless connections to the surrounding landscape and views to create a cohesive living experience.

The main living pavilion serves as the heart of the home, embodying these concepts in their purest form. With expansive 14.5-metre-wide openings on both sides, the pavilion features full-height doors that fully pocket away, allowing unobstructed access to outdoor spaces and maximizing the connection to the surrounding landscape. The decision to minimize vertical elements to just four posts ensures minimal interruption to the openness of the space, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and reinforcing the expansive outlook beyond.

The “ha-ha” garden beyond further extends this idea, eliminating the need for a balustrade and enhancing integration with the natural surroundings, while strategically placed landscaping draws the eye toward the horizon. The main living plane seamlessly extends from the primary outdoor area to an expansive pool terrace, complete with a sunken fire pit lounge designed to take in the elevated city views.

A strong emphasis on self-finishing materials is evident throughout the design, with selections chosen to age gracefully while requiring minimal maintenance. This approach enhances the home’s durability while contributing to its calm, timeless character.
